Fun Cakes to Make With Kids

Decorating cakes allows kids to use their creativity in an edible art form. It also provides the opportunity to teach kids basic kitchen safety skills in a fun way, especially if you allow the kids to participate in the baking process. Encourage the children to make alterations to these cake ideas and personalize the cakes.

Use a round cake as the base for an animal-face cake. Allow the kids to select the animal that will serve as the model. Use gel food coloring to dye the frosting to make the color of the animal selected. Have the kids spread the frosting over the top and sides of the round cake.

Use pre-made fondant to make the facial features of the animal. Fondant works like Play-Doh, allowing the kids to easily mold it into eyes, ears, a nose and a mouth. Another option is to use candy to create the facial features. Have the kids place the facial features on the iced cake to complete the animal face.

Cakes are an integral part of nearly every celebration from birthdays to weddings to retirement parties. There are numerous fun cake toppers available for every occasion, or you can create your own fairly easily. The first step is choosing the theme or basic design you’d like. A train cake would be out of place at a Batman party, and humorous wedding-cake toppers would be out of place at a sophisticated wedding.

Kids’ birthday cakes are usually the most entertaining and creative cakes you can bake. For kids, animated cake toppers work well; kids like to watch things that move, and it gives the birthday child a toy or collectible to keep after the cake is long gone. For a train-themed party, use a miniature wind-up train that goes around the cake on a small, round track. Try a small battery-operated Ferris wheel or carousel for a carnival-themed party. Make a doll cake using a real Barbie for a Barbie party. Use car or plane toys, even a little racetrack. Music-box ballerinas provide music and a dancing ballerina for a ballerina party. Lego structures are terrific for a Lego-themed party, and little jungle animals would be great for a safari party.

There are many humorous wedding cake toppers available. These are great for more casual weddings, or a couple with a sense of humor. There is the classic image of bride dragging groom, or pulling his jacket as he tries to sneak away. In another classic, the bride wears the tuxedo pants while the groom stands there in his boxer shorts. The bride and groom “taking the plunge” is fitting yet funny.

Kids love to make or receive a cake that is designed with them in mind. From an image of a popular cartoon character to something unique they created to make someone they love smile, most children enjoy decorating cakes. A bit of creativity helps if you’re looking to either design a cake for a child or, alternatively, plan on spending an afternoon helping your little one create a cake masterpiece.

If you will be decorating a cake with a child, ask them first if they have any ideas for the subject of the cake and how it should be designed. Grab a sketchbook and some crayons or markers and sit down together to brainstorm ideas on paper before you begin making your cake. This will also help you determine what supplies you will need, such as icing colors and sprinkles. A child will take pride in a cake that they helped to design.

Computer programs allow children to create shapes and fill them in with various colors. Once they’ve finished designing the cake, print it out and use it as a blueprint. You can even take your blueprint with you as your shop for icing and other decorative items that will allow you to create your design.
